Walking in the dense forest near tiny Caiette, B.C., in 1912, he suddenly hears haunting violin music and a human bustle. Andrew’s wealthy British family banishes him to Canada after his unpatriotic opinions disrupt a dinner party. The Glass Hotelrevolves around a financial collapse, inspired by the Bernie Madoff fraud scandal, and the aftermath for both those who profited and those who were ruined.In Mandel’s stunning latest, people find themselves inhabiting different places and times, from early 20th-century Canada to a 23rd-century moon colony.
Sea of Tranquility will be Mandel's sixth novel. Her most recent, The Glass Hotel, was a finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize and selected by President Barack Obama as a favourite book of 2020.

The novel traverses time, space and reality, introducing a wide range of characters living in British Columbia in 1912 and on the moon in 2401. "This is the kind of book that happens when you're working in a soundscape of constant ambulance sirens," said Mandel in a press release.Īccording to the book's publisher, HarperCollins Canada, Sea of Tranquility "is a remarkable feat of storytelling that delves into themes that will be familiar to Mandel's many readers - time, art, love, wilderness, what makes the world real - and introduces readers to a remarkable cast of characters."
Mandel wrote the book over the course of the pandemic, trapped in New York City for the entirety of 2020.
